A closer look at Rakuten Card: rewards and everyday use

Rakuten Card has no annual fee for the standard card and connects everyday spending with Rakuten Points. We examine Rakuten Ichiba, app management and redemption, including reward exceptions and fees.

This article covers the standard Rakuten Card

This article covers the standard Rakuten Card with no annual fee. Ordinary eligible purchases generally earn one point per JPY 100. Family cards also have no annual fee, while ETC cards have separate fees and waiver conditions. Paid Gold and Premium cards have different terms.

One attraction is keeping everyday purchases and reward checks together. If your usual shops accept Rakuten Points or you use Rakuten Ichiba, it can be easier to use points for necessary purchases rather than forget them. Approval and credit limits are determined after application; issue is not guaranteed.

Standard rewards: watch rounding on each purchase

Card-use points are generally calculated per transaction at one point for each JPY 100, not by adding all monthly purchases before rounding. For two eligible JPY 199 purchases, the ordinary reward is 1 + 1 = 2 points. This example assumes standard eligible payments.

Amounts below JPY 100 on each purchase do not earn ordinary points, so an advertised 1% may not exactly match actual earnings. Do not add unnecessary purchases just to earn points.

Rakuten Card conditions to check (recorded October 23, 2026)
ItemRecorded conditions for the standard card
Annual feeNo fee for the main card; ETC and other additional features have separate conditions
Standard pointsGenerally one point per JPY 100 per purchase, with exceptions
Rakuten IchibaThree-times structure for qualifying ordinary purchases; eligible amounts and caps differ by component
Payment dateGenerally the 27th of the following month; some services close on the 25th, and sales data can arrive late
FeesCheck revolving/instalment costs and automatic revolving-payment settings

Utilities and other payments may not earn the same 1%

Exceptions in the official list include specified utilities and taxes earning one point per JPY 500, and specified insurance premiums earning one per JPY 200. These are provider-specific; do not assume every electricity payment is treated alike.

Electronic-money top-ups, cash advances, annual fees and other charges may differ from ordinary shopping. Check official exclusions and conditions. Rakuten Pay rewards and rewards for presenting a point card are separate mechanisms from credit-card payment rewards.

Rakuten Ichiba and SPU: separate the three-times breakdown and caps

For qualifying ordinary Rakuten Ichiba purchases, the basic three-times structure comprises one-times shopping points, one-times standard card points and one-times card-benefit points. The calculation bases differ: the card-benefit component excludes consumption tax, shipping and wrapping from the card payment amount.

The standard card-benefit component is capped at 1,000 points a month and generally awarded as limited-time points around the 15th of the next month; late sales data can delay this another month. Standard and benefit points arrive at different times, so check statements and PointClub separately. SPU limited-time points generally expire at the end of the month after award.

Orders using points, excluded shops/products and hometown-tax donations have separate treatment. Extra multipliers for mobile, banking and other services require their own contracts or registration; the card alone does not unlock every maximum multiplier.

Read campaign periods and registration requirements first

For campaigns such as “days ending in 5 or 0” and joining offers, check eligible dates, registration, use period, cards, caps and award timing. Keep standard rewards, SPU and campaign bonuses separate.

Terms vary by campaign. This article does not promise a fixed joining bonus or a maximum rate for everyone. Before applying or buying, compare the current official campaign terms with your registration record.

Use the app, alerts and statements to stay organised

The Rakuten Card app lets you check statements, billing details and transaction notes. It also manages campaign registration information and supports biometric login on compatible devices. A short purchase note can help when a merchant name alone is hard to remember.

Check app-level notification permissions too. Do not stop at an alert; compare amounts and details after the bill is finalised. Use official app or website guidance for suspicious charges.

Distinguish physical-card contactless payments from phone services

A compatible physical card can make contactless payments at supported terminals. Check contactless symbols, payment network and accepted method. Phone payments are another option when device and service conditions match.

The cited announcement says new setup for the older Android Rakuten Pay “Rakuten Card contactless payment” service ended at 13:00 on September 30, 2026, with service closure planned around mid-January to mid-February 2027. Check the new-wallet migration guidance. This does not mean physical-card contactless, Google Pay QUICPay and Apple Pay are all ending.

Payment is generally on the 27th; watch billing timing

The usual cycle closes at month-end for payment on the following month’s 27th, or next business day if the bank is closed. Rakuten Ichiba, Rakuten Pay and Rakuten Travel use a 25th closing date, so purchases from the 26th to month-end are billed on the 27th two months later. Sales data may arrive late; check the statement rather than assuming from purchase date alone.

Register the debit account and have enough funds ready by the previous business day. Avoiding late payments and fees comes before collecting points.

Plan point use alongside expiry dates

At Rakuten Ichiba and other eligible services, you can specify all or part of your available points. Redemption units and caps differ by service and membership rank. Points are not identical to cash; check the amount actually applicable at checkout.

Ordinary points generally remain valid for one year including the month of the latest qualifying award, with qualifying awards extending validity. Limited-time points have separate deadlines and do not extend the same way. Check upcoming expiry in PointClub and use points for purchases already needed.

Ordinary points can also be applied to monthly shopping bills at one point equivalent to JPY 1. The application window runs from the 12th to as late as the 24th, depending on the registered bank. Applications start at 50 points, with rank-based caps. Limited-time and externally exchanged points are excluded; check debit-account registration and other conditions.

Check revolving and instalment costs before rewards

The cited standard-card shopping revolving-payment fee is an effective annual rate of 17.64%. Smaller monthly payments can prolong the balance and fees. Check automatic revolving settings too. An announced calculation-method change applies from November 2026 bills; use the latest official repayment simulator.

Instalments chosen at purchase and those selected afterwards have different terms. The cited official FAQ lists effective annual rates of 12.25–15.00% for purchase-time instalments and 17.64% for later changes made from June 1, 2026. Check instalment counts, eligible transactions and total payment; avoid fee-bearing methods just for rewards.

If you already use Rakuten Points, check statements in the app and mainly pay in full within your means, this card may be straightforward to organise. It is not better for everyone; choose based on ordinary spending.
